1.   Minutes of the last meeting - Agreed.
2.   Site Introductions and 'Highlights'
  • Fleet Pond: have now installed another 80m of multi-user path around the pond with the assistance of the HDC Rangers. New leaflet now available.
  • Moor Green Lakes: Is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year with an Open Day on Saturday 7th June when the hides will be 'manned' and guided tours available
  • Frimley Fuel Allotments: Still have very low volunteer numbers so appreciated a visit from the Blackwater Valley Tuesday volunteers. Hope to have good response to 'Go Wild'.
  • Bourne Conservation Group: Have had a successful first year. Group was established on the back of an 'Earthwatch grant to Stan Cockett'. Have held 8 tasks, 4 in woodland and 4 on footpaths. Having a break for the summer but will be surveying for the Great Green Bush Cricket which was recorded in the area in 1997.
3.    Katrina Slocombe - Talks on Earthwatch Trip to the Pantonelle, Brazil.
  • Katrina has recently returned from an Earthwatch trip and would like to give talks to Local Groups who are interested. The research farm where she was based covered a number of different projects including: interactions between native peccaries and domestic pigs; ecology of bats and lakes in the area; relative costs and benefits of different methods of fishing etc. If any groups are interested in booking Katrina for their groups, or would like more details please contact her on: KSlocombe@aqa.org.uk
4.   Training and Events
  • Please let BVCP know if you are arranging any training events and we can circulate details.
  • CR was interested in a Strimmer Course, BVCP to investigate interest from other groups . . . Action - BVP
5.   Blackwater Valley Volunteer News
  • SD would appreciate any feedback on the latest edition of the BVCP Volunteer Newsletter and any thoughts on how it might be improved. BVCP would like to continue to widen the coverage of the newsletter, and would be pleased to include news items from other groups.
  • Those present at the meeting felt that it was worthwhile maintaining the quality of the publication and widening its distribution by making sure that copies were given to local groups to be handed out to their active volunteers.
6.   'Go Wild' In September
Download the Go Wild logos here

Progress so far is summarised on the attached sheets:
  • Summary of what has been done so far, and plans for run up to September.
  • List of all events (to date, it would still be possible to add some if necessary). Please check carefully for your group and let us have any amendments asap, this list will form the basis of all publicity so it is vital that it is accurate.
  • Some notes from Kate on ideas for publicity etc. Would any groups who were unable to come to the meeting please read this carefully, any thoughts and feedback would be appreciated. The main focus is that BVCP will provide the 'Valley-Wide' publicity but to get the most out of the month it is vital that individual groups back this up with local advertising, press etc. . . . Action - All
Other suggestions made at the meeting were:
  • If funding is limited, it would be better to spend up front on promotion and things which would benefit groups in the future rather than on 'giveaways' which were going to those who had already come along.
  • 'A' boards for groups which could be used when out on task to advertise the group would be a good investment - if funding was available.
  • Cove Brook Greenway Group have a stall in Farnborough centre and all other groups would be welcome to add their promotional literature on the day.
  • Press launch to be held at the next Local Groups Meeting in August. BVCP will arrange for a photographer and some props so have a photo to use to promote the event before it starts.
Since the meeting we have heard from the Countryside Trust and have been given a grant of £500 from them. We are waiting to hear from SC Johnson.
7.   Art in the Countryside . . . Action - Rowhill, Fleet Pond, Brickfields, Cove Brook
  • HCC have a scheme this year to promote 'art' in the countryside. They have offered to fund some arts events in the Valley. These could be held separately or in association with the Go Wild Month
  • Groups need to be within Hampshire. It might make sense to tie this in with 'Go Wild' and possibly with the sites that we are using for media focus.
  • The idea would be to provide an 'artist' in residence for the day, hope to be able to get someone doing something that is appropriate for the site. Possibilities include willow weaving, art from trash, a play ….. HCC might be able to suggest possible artists or if anyone knows someone suitable.
  • Are groups interested. What kind of thing would they be interested in holding. Need to feed back via HCC to organise.
  • Cove Brook will be hosting an artist in association with Go Wild.
8.   A.O.B.
  • Circulation of information by email. Those present felt that this was working well. If any group has information which they think that others might be interested in, please forward it to Sue at BVCP and she will distribute it to the other groups.
  • Fleet Pond attended the B&Q 'giveaway' and collected some useful things but not quite as good as had hoped - but they were in the 'second' batch to have access so may have missed the good stuff!
9.   Date of next meeting
