Adder - Vipera berus
known as the Common Viper
(New Forest Herpetological Center May 2000)

This animal is poisonous.

Grows to a length of 80cm (2ft 8in). Grey-brown to black body with characteristic zig-zag markings easing identification, however on darker animals the markings can merge with their overall colour. Feeds on small mammals, young birds and lizards killing them by poison injection when biting the prey. Venom is produced from a pair of glands behind the eyes. Will attack humans if provoked or surprised, the poison is rarely fatal but medical attention should be sought immediately.

Widespread in central Europe, Asia to Japan, local, found in mixed forests, on heaths and open woodland and some wet areas during the summer. Usually nocturnal it occasionally will hunt during the day. Hibernates in groups sometimes with other snakes October to March. Gives birth to upto 20 live young or eggs from which the young emerge immediately. Males ♂ “fight” over females ♀ during the spring without injuring each other as a part of a courtship ritual.
