Black Medic - Medicago lupulina
Grows to a height of 40cm (1ft 4in). Widespread and common annual of short grassland, wasteland and roadside verges except in Northern Ireland and north west areas of Scotland. Downy trifoliate leaves with each elliptical leaflet having a point at the central apex. Dense rounded yellow flower heads appear during April to October, ripening to black pods giving the plant it's name.
Very similar to Lesser trefoil - Trifolium dubium, but the terminal point is missing in Lesser trefoil.
