Red Clover - Trifolium irifolium pratense

Height up to 40cm (16in). Familiar grassland perennial which is widespread and common throughout the country. Leaves of three sessile elliptic leaflets each bearing a white or brownish crescent-shaped mark, borne on erect slightly branched stems. Pinkish globular purple flowers in unstalked heads, 3cm (1.2in) across, appear May-October. Grows in meadows, roadsides and forest clearings, from lowlands to mountains. Often cultivated for forage. The cultivated form T. i. incarnatum has striking cylindrical heads.
