Sharp Rush - Juncus acutus

A perennial rush forming stout dense prickly clumps of 1-2 leaves stiff dark green leaves per stem, flower stems appearing spring and summer are 40-100cm (15-40in) tall, to 5mm (0.2") diameter, extremely sharply pointed. Brown flowers on each stem in clumps about 1/3 down from the tip. The seeds are contained in dark brown capsules 5 mm long. Grows at watersides and damp areas in a wide range of soils, does not require wet soil once established. New plants do not flower until at least 2 years old.
