Sharp Rush - Juncus acutus (J. acutiflorus)
A perennial rush forming stout dense prickly clumps of 1-2 leaves stiff dark green leaves per stem, flower stems appearing spring and summer are 40-100cm (15-40in) tall, to 5mm (0.2") diameter, extremely sharply pointed. Brown flowers on each stem in clumps about one third of the way down from the tip. The seeds are contained in dark brown capsules 5mm long. Grows at watersides and damp areas in a wide range of soils, does not require wet soil once established. New plants do not flower until at least two years old.
