August 2018 - Dredging

Dredging works started on Monday of the second week at the northern end of the pond where the roads drainage from the Crown Estate enters from a 15in pipe. The granite kerbstones used for buffering the flow were set about 300mm higher and the revetment started. Once completed dredging started by filling in behind the revetment with silt removed from the pond, this area will be planted with Reeds from the Tices Meadow Nature Reserve once it settles and dries out a little.

A holding pond was temporarily constructed at the pond outfall where any fish found during the drainage operation were stored for release back to the main pond once completed. During this time another Terrapin was discovered, unfortunately it was also released into the holding pond rather than being captured. It was not seen on releasing the holding pond into the main pond, it may have been scooped out with the silt from that section.

Once a further revetment along the back edge of the pond was constructed and filled with silt to stabilise the bank there, dredging of the remainder proceeded quite quickly. Unfortunately the tracked dumper used to transport the silt eventually proved useless as it kept breaking down, it would appear the bucket release mechanism was not up to the job. The de–silting job was completed by the two long reach diggers effectively working in tandem passing the silt from one to the other.
