Great Reed Mace - Typha latifolia

Large sedge like perennial freshwater plant widespread in the UK, it grows from spreading rhizomes in shallow, still or slow flowing water on mud, silt or wet soil.

Height approximately 1 to 1.5m (3 - 5ft) with long grey-green leaves about 20mm (0.8in) wide. A single flower spike appears June to August comprised of a brown sausage shaped array of female ♀ flowers topped by a narrower stalk of male ♂ flowers.
