Shield lichen - Parmelia sulcata

Also known as - Shield lichen, Net–marked parmelia

Many thanks to Fay Newbury at Reading University for the identification of this Lichen species – Parmelia sulcata.

A thallus formed of flat, "leafy", blue grey lobes 4–20cm (1.5–8in) in diameter that grows on bark, widespread and common on trees in open habitats and occasionally on rocks.  Each lobe has a fine network of white lines on the surface giving it a cracked appearance.  Net–marked parmelia or Shield lichen, from the family Parmeliaceae is very tolerant of pollution and is widespread making it one of the more common lichens.
