Common Striped Woodlouse - Philoscia muscorum
Family - Philosciidae
Also known as - Fast Woodlouse
The Common Striped Woodlouse - Philoscia muscorum is a smaller woodlouse species typically reaching about 8-11mm (0.3-0.45in) in length, with a distinctive "stepped" mottled brown body outline and a dark central stripe running along it's back. It can be found all year round but more commonly from spring to autumn.
They can be variable in colouration and whilst most are commonly brown or grey, it may also be found in yellow, red, or orange forms, although all have a black head. The antennae have three flagellal segments at the tip.
It lives up to its nickname of the "fast woodlouse" because it moves more quickly than other woodlouse species and is often found roaming in grass or open litter rather than hiding under cover. It is an Isopod species which is widespread and native to the British Isles and Europe where it will be found in moist, well-vegetated areas like grasslands, woodland floors, gardens, and hedgerows feeding on decaying plant matter, playing an important part in breaking down organic material. It is an introduced species to parts of North America.
